If you’re on call for a build, you don’t have time for philosophy. You need a triage order that converges.

First: classify the problem (quality vs performance vs stability)

  • Performance regression: lower FPS, higher GPU time, worse 1% lows.
  • Stability: device lost, GPU hang, driver reset, intermittent corruption.

Don’t mix categories. A flicker is not a “performance issue,” even if it appeared after you changed a performance setting.

Symptoms: During transitions, brightness oscillates; looks like unstable tonemapping.

Root cause: Feeding inconsistent color space/exposure metadata frame-to-frame; auto-exposure too aggressive for temporal accumulation.

Fix: Stabilize exposure; ensure consistent input space; reset or damp history contribution during large exposure changes.
