You just want to check cameras. Not become a part-time network archaeologist who deciphers why the DVR app works from the office Wi‑Fi but not from your phone,
why playback stutters at 02:00, or why “P2P Cloud” mysteriously re-enabled itself after a firmware update.
Here’s the grown-up solution: keep the DVR/NVR and cameras off the public internet entirely, then access them through a VPN you control.
Done right, it’s boring, reliable, and far safer than the usual port-forwarding circus.
The real threat model (and why port forwarding is a trap)
Most CCTV systems fail in two ways: they get exposed, or they get flaky. Sometimes both. The usual recipe is painfully consistent:
someone forwards ports from the internet to the DVR/NVR, maybe changes the default password (maybe), then wonders why the box gets hammered by login attempts,
or why a firmware bug turns into an external incident.
Your DVR/NVR is not a hardened internet-facing service. It’s an appliance. It’s often running old embedded Linux, has a web UI of questionable parentage,
and comes with “helpful” features like UPnP and vendor P2P relays that are great for demos and terrible for risk.
What you’re protecting against
- Credential stuffing and brute force on web/RTSP/SDK ports. Your users will reuse passwords; attackers will reuse lists.
- Exposed management surfaces: web UIs, telnet/ssh (sometimes hidden), ONVIF services, and vendor-specific SDK ports.
- Silent remote access features like P2P cloud and UPnP that reopen exposure after you “fixed it.”
- Lateral movement: once the DVR is compromised, it sits on your LAN near everything you actually care about.
- Privacy and compliance failures: camera feeds are personal data in many jurisdictions; “we forwarded 37777 to the DVR” is not a policy.
What a VPN changes
A VPN doesn’t magically secure a DVR. What it does is drastically reduce the attack surface by removing the DVR from the public internet.
Then you put access control where it belongs: at the VPN edge, with modern cryptography, sane authentication, logs, and a kill switch for offboarding.
The VPN is your front door. The DVR stays inside. You don’t install a bank vault door on a garden shed.

Avoid “VPN server on the DVR” unless you enjoy debugging closed firmware.
Avoid “open a port and whitelist the office IP” unless you’re sure every remote user will never leave the office again.
And avoid vendor P2P when you need audit, determinism, or any kind of compliance story that survives a meeting with Legal.
Choosing the VPN: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, or “vendor cloud”
WireGuard: the default choice for 2025
WireGuard is lean, fast, and predictable. It uses modern cryptography, has minimal configuration surface, and tends to behave well on flaky links.
For CCTV, those are not luxuries. They are the difference between “works from the parking lot” and “works always.”
Operationally, WireGuard is also refreshingly honest: if you can’t reach the endpoint, you can’t reach it. No “TLS handshake succeeded but routes didn’t.”
That simplicity pays dividends when you’re troubleshooting at 03:00.
OpenVPN: still useful, especially when you need enterprise auth glue
OpenVPN is older and heavier, but it has mature tooling around certificate management and user auth, and a long track record.
If you must integrate with existing setups (RADIUS, certain client distribution models, legacy appliances), OpenVPN may be the pragmatic choice.
IPsec: great when you already have it everywhere
IPsec site-to-site can be excellent, especially with decent firewalls. But interop quirks, phase settings, and vendor UI abstractions
can turn simple routing into an interpretive dance. If your environment is already IPsec-heavy, stick with it. If not, don’t start there just to access cameras.
Vendor P2P cloud: convenient, opaque, and risky
Vendor P2P exists because NAT traversal is hard and people want “scan a QR code and it works.”
It also means your video access may depend on external relays, unknown logging practices, and client apps that update on their own schedule.
If you care about uptime and security, you want fewer dependencies, not more.

Network design: subnets, routing, DNS, and not punching holes in walls
Segment the cameras and recorder
Put cameras and the DVR/NVR on a dedicated VLAN/subnet. Not because VLANs are magical, but because they force you to define policy.
You can allow the NVR to talk to cameras, allow your VPN clients to talk to the NVR, and block everything else by default.
If your recorder has two NICs (LAN + camera), use them properly: one side for camera traffic, one side for admin/client access.
Otherwise, at least separate with VLANs and firewall rules.
Decide: full-tunnel or split-tunnel
